Save the date is a way to let someone know that they are being invited to a wedding or other type of important celebration. This asks them to check their calendar and Save the Date! Typically, this is done for weddings. This is one of the first steps that a couple will make when planning their special day. Consider it an honor that they want to have you there to join in on the day that is their celebration of love and commitment.
There is not a hard rule on when to send out the Save the Date invitation. But most times its certainly after a couple has booked the wedding venue. That way they have secured the date and can share the name of the wedding venue, date, location and time. Save the Date’s will either come in the form of an email or a more formal printed card. This information is semi limited which allows the couple to make changes or not rush to book vendors. The most important thing is to make sure that you are aware of the upcoming big day and allow you to lock down that date for their wedding. It is important to the guest to know where the event will be held. They can then decide if they need to take time off work. make hotel reservations, get a sitter, put money aside, etc. To reiterate, no information should be placed on the Save the Date that hasn’t been finalized.
Consider including the wedding venues website on the Save the Date. That way your guests and see what type of facility it is and may gather information in their FAO section that will be helpful.
Prosperity Mansion & Farm recommends asking for at least a tentative yes or no within several weeks of receiving the Save the Date. This is not the final RSVP but at least the couple has an idea of who may be able to attend. If you know for whatever reason, that you are unable to come, it appropriate to tell the couple immediately. Acquiring a good head count is vital to planning the reception. A wedding can cost a lot of money. When the couple has a good idea of the number of guests they can decide on a menu, type of goodies at the bar etc.
Regarding the cost of Save the Date invitations, you can have them professionally printed or make them yourself. Canva has a wonderful program with amazing templates to create your own invitations. If you are not comfortable, there are also online companies that will assist you. And if you are really on a tight budget a simple email with the information, we talked about serves the same purpose.
Remember that a Save the Date is not the same as the actual wedding invitation. This is just an opportunity to………….. Save the Date!
